A Shaman's Worlds

Contained within this seemingly complex cosmology, there exist alternative universes that in physical terms seem paradoxical and scientifically enigmatic. However, in shamanic terms, all that exists is spirit and all is one without separation, we are all literally related, connected to the same source. Accordingly, a shaman's experiences in these realms lose differentiation from ordinary reality since the upper, middle and lower realms exist in harmoniously with ordinary reality.

From my experiences and exposure to various shamanic traditions, I would explain the shaman's threefold cosmology as follows:

Lower World:

Is accessed by traveling to a familiar and possibly real life place, such as a waterfall, hollow tree, a pool, a cave, etc. From this access point, the shaman enters a tunnel that leads deeper down eventually the tunnel opens to reveal the shaman's unique Lower World landscape. This landscape can vary according to the lessons or information being sought in the journey. Typically, the shaman confronts personal tragedy, eventually healing and turning those aspects into personal power. Here the shaman gains strength, meets power animals and other allies who help the shaman develop needed skills.

Middle World:

Is the closest alternate reality to our present waking reality, it is the Axis Mundi, the link between above and below. In the Middle World, a shaman's journey typically centers on asking for help and advice on waking reality issues such as finances, career, lost items, to see another location, to conduct healing and energy work, to check on far away loved ones, etc. In a Middle World journey however, the shaman will go beyond the ordinary sensations of everyday life and perceive the natural world unencumbered by the physical body. A journey to the Middle World can deepen understanding of ordinary reality, revealing its wonders and beauty.

Upper World:

The shaman enters the Upper World by going "up" as in climbing a tree, or plant, similar to the "Jack the Beanstalk" story; by rising up in the smoke of a fire, climbing a mountain and jumping upwards, walking along a rainbow, climbing a ladder or staircase, etc. The Upper World is a place of higher consciousness where the shaman meets humans who have crossed over, teachers, guides, angels and spiritual masters, who will guide the shaman in the exploration of our the divine self, for asking the existential questions like, "Why am I here?" or "Show me my true life path."
